Savvy Shopping Tips for the New Year

Once they’ve shopped the after-Christmas sales and clearances, smart shoppers head for the home store. Traditionally, January White Sales make this the best time of year to stock up on sheets, towels, and table linens.

But say the savviest shoppers, some of the best prices of the year on lots of other goods often turn up in January:

Bicycles – Seems silly to buy a bike when you may be months away from riding it, but this is the time of year when stores clear out last year’s models.

Cameras – For much the same reason, January is a good month to pick up good buys on digital cameras, lenses, camera cases and accessories.

Hot foods and beverages – Supermarkets know it’s chilly outside, and this is the time they offer frequent sales on soups, stews, hot cereals, hot chocolate and other cold-weather favorites.

Diet aids – To lose weight is still the number one New Year’s resolution, making January a good time to find low prices on diet foods and shakes, frozen meals, fat-free yogurt and granola  bars.

Stop smoking aids – To stop smoking is another of the most popular New Year’s resolutions in the nation. Look for sales on patches, gums, lozenges and inhalers.

Cold and flu items – It’s the season, so look for sales on cough and cold medicines as well as vitamins, pain relievers, and lip balms.

Winter coats – It may sound counterproductive, but retailers put coats and raincoats on sale while the weather is at its coldest. They know that once the weather warms up, they will be left with stock that still on the rack.

TVs – Everyone wants a newer, bigger or better TV in time for Super Bowl Sunday. Retailers will be bidding for your business, so compare prices and save.
