Summer Living Spaces

Spread the love

outdoorroomSummertime living is easy.  This is the perfect time to either add a porch or update your existing porch.  Porches can be used to just sit down and relax – the covered shape can provide a great deal of shade and allow you to turn off the air conditioning and relax. Every type of home welcomes the addition of a porch, whether it is contemporary, traditional, cottage, or Georgian. Depending on the site and house layout, porches can fit in a range of spots, too.  There are many varieties – wraparound, front, side, and back porches.

If you have a porch, there are numerous additions that can make your porch even more enticing and useable during the long days of summer. To match a porch style to your home, it’s best to see all the options available.  Turning outdoor spaces into rooms definitely adds to your living space.  Many people are finding ways to make their porches a comfortable place to eat and even sleep. Adding an interesting mix of seating makes an outdoor space feel more like an indoor living area. Small rockers and sofas with ottomans are cozy.  An outdoor rug beneath the seating adds a nice touch and certainly is soothing to the foot. A built-in swing adds an entirely new dynamic to any porch.  A decorative pillow on the swing gives it a “homey” touch.  Ceiling fans add a cool breeze and an ambiance that enhance the cozy atmosphere of outdoor living.

Some porches are built with dramatic cathedral ceilings and stone arches. Some are built with a high-rise canopy that can add a whimsical touch to your outdoor haven. Many porches have draperies or bamboo shades to dim the sunlight and add privacy to a once very open space. Porches have become unique dining areas.  Along with the dining area, many homeowners have built outdoor kitchens to insure that the cook experiences the outdoor living festivities as much as the family and guests.

The front porch has evolved along with the quickening pace of everyday life. Porches were originally designed to create a more tolerable living space — a place for rest, relaxation and cooling breezes. Using this space not only can improve the look of our house, but can better the quality of our lives as we spend more time with family, friends and neighbors.
