Time for a Cool Check Up!

Spread the love

cooling checkThe hot days of summer have arrived and there is no time like the present to check the air-conditioning system of your home.  Temperatures that will go 90 degrees plus can be dangerous without the cooling comfort inside of your home.  Having your system checked makes sense economically too.  Clean air conditioning systems run more efficiently and save money in the long run. There are things that a homeowner can do to make sure the air conditioning runs the most efficiently.

Keep the house closed as much as possible during the day.  Try to avoid letting heat and humidity inside the home. Ventilating the home with fans is highly recommended. Make sure that all air conditioning ducts that run through unheated basements, attics, and crawl spaces are sealed. Do not air-condition unused rooms.  It is recommended to keep your thermostat around 78 degrees or higher. Awnings on the windows that face south or where there is less shade will limit the amount of heat that comes in the home. If you leave your home for more than an hour, turn off the air conditioner.  This will dramatically reduce your electric bill. Dust build-up can reduce the air flow by at least 1 percent each week. Be sure you clean your A/C’s air filter regularly.  Never use a dehumidifier at the same time your air conditioner is on. The dehumidifier will increase the cooling load, forcing the air conditioner to work harder. Make sure you have the right amount of refrigerant.  It is estimated that 90% of air conditioners are running inefficiently because they’re either overcharged or undercharged with refrigerant.

Professional maintenance can increase your air-conditioning’s life expectancy, improve performance and reduce the severity and frequency of breakdowns. Find a qualified technician. A novice homeowner cannot be expected to know if problems lie in the ductwork, motor, coils or elsewhere — you have to take extra care to avoid unscrupulous service providers.

See what’s going on outside. The motor in your AC unit is located outdoors, where it’s exposed to inevitable wear-and-tear from the elements. So your technician should check it make sure everything is in good running order. To discharge air efficiently, the motor needs to be unrestricted — don’t surround it with high flowers or plants.

It is growing warmer with each new day.  There is nothing more soothing than walking into a cool house after experiencing intense heat on the outside.
